The Egypt hosted one of the most powerful and remarkable civilizations of antiquity. Its first historical records date from around six thousand years ago. This lush culture flourished until about 800 BC. Then, the Egyptians were conquered by several peoples: Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, French and British, until they became independent in 1922. Alexandria represented the heyday of Hellenism. Egypt was also the historical stage for the three great monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Moses was born here.
