Weather and Climate in Nicaragua

The climate of Nicaragua ranges from the humid and warm to the tropical zone, with temperatures in the lowlands and on the coast remaining stable with an average of 25 ° C, while they fluctuate between 15 and 20 ° C at high altitudes. The precipitation vary greatly from region to region. The amount of precipitation is greatest on the Caribbean coast, while the Pacific lowlands and the west of the highlands are spared from the humid trade windsstay that are already raining down further east. The dry season on the Pacific side lasts from November to April, on the Caribbean coast only from February to April.

The winter or rainy season on the Pacific side is between May and November, with the wettest time in September and October when the sea turtles come to the beach. Summer or dry season is from November to April. On the Caribbean side, especially along the Río San Juan, it is rainy all year round.

The most pleasant travel time for most of Nicaragua is the dry season from November to April, whereby it can get very hot towards the end of the dry season, usually at the end of April / beginning of May, and the water levels in the canals are falling. From January to March it hardly ever rains in western Nicaragua. The best time to visit the Pacific or the central regions is at the beginning of the dry season (December and January). During this time the temperatures are lower and the vegetation is still green. The dry season there from February to April is ideal for a visit to the sparsely populated Caribbean lowlands with its extensive rainforests. The tourist high season (December to March) is recommended for hiking and camping, especially along the border with Costa Rica.

Most Nicaraguans spend their days off at Easter on the beach, so the accommodations are booked out weeks in advance.

Especially in the rainy season from June to November, Nicaragua can be in the catchment area of ​​a hurricane. This is most likely between July and October.
