Argentina is in principle a year-round travel destination, but there are very strong regional climatic differences. Because the seasons are exactly opposite in the southern hemisphere, it is summer in Argentina when it is winter in Europe.
The highest temperatures are from November to March, the lowest temperatures start in June and end in September. During the months of April, May and October is the climate temperate. The greatest temperature fluctuations can be found in the north (Salta, Jujuy, Tucumán, Iguazú) and in the south (e.g. in Patagonia). In the north it is usually very hot and dry, especially near the Andes mountain range. In the Andes there is a high risk of sunburn when the sun is shining. The west of the Puna high desert is one of the least rainy areas in the world and in the east it is humid, which is due to the wind that blows from the Atlantic. In the south the weather is much colder. Tierra del Fuego differs from the southern climate in Argentina, here it is cool all year round with relatively high rainfall with only slight temperature differences between summer and winter.
The Argentine summer is the best season to travel to Patagonia. At this time of year the weather is generally better – temperatures rise to 25 ° C and the days are getting longer. In winter in northern (including the Iguazú Falls in the province of Misiones) and northwestern Argentina (Salta, Jujuy, Tucumán) the temperatures are much more pleasant than in summer and there is less rain. At night it can get very cold depending on the altitude.
Autumn and spring are the best times of the year to visit Buenos Aires and Cuyo. The summer in the capital, on the other hand, is hot and humid. Mendoza, Cordoba and the lakes area are very beautiful in autumn, when the leaves turn red and yellow and the temperatures are pleasant. Also, there are fewer crowds here at this time. The weather in Cordoba and San Luis, especially in the sierras (mountains), is very pleasant in summer despite the heat.
The ski season is between mid-June and mid-October, and most resorts are fully booked (and also more expensive) in July and August. Between mid-December and February and July, the Argentines themselves have their own vacation, so many places are very overcrowded and the hotels are more expensive and usually fully booked. Buenos Aires is the year over visits
winter (June-August) is not too cold and does not last too long, the temperatures are on average over 10 ° C. In summer the temperatures rise up to 35 ° C with a relatively high humidity. The best time to travel to Buenos Aires are the autumn and spring months. A stay in Buenos Aires between mid-December and February is not recommended due to the heat. The Región del Norte Grande The northeast (in the region around the Iguazú waterfalls, Chaco, Iberá swamps) as well as the pampas region are humid all year round, with the highest amounts of precipitation occurring in the subtropical rainforest of the province of Misiones. This area can be visited all year round, the best time being in the autumn and spring months, as the average temperature in this region is 25 ° C. Summer (from January to March) is very humid (the humidity can rise to 100%) and very hot (more than 40 ° C). In winter there is less rain, but the temperature can be up to 15 ° C during the day.
Northwest Argentina (Catamarca, Jujuy, Salta, Santiago del Estero and Tucumán) is dry in the Andes area with a short rainy season in summer. Salta, Tucumán and Jujuy are very good travel destinations between autumn and spring.
The central part of Argentina has a Mediterranean climate, making the area a pleasant destination all year round. Due to the climatic conditions, it is possible to grow wine here. When traveling through this area from February to March, you can experience the grape harvest here.
Patagonia
The best time to travel to Patagonia Argentina is between October and April, the main season is from December to February. During these summer months there are moderate temperatures, which generally hardly rise to over 20 ° C, at night they sometimes drop to around 0 ° C. In contrast, the Argentine winter (approx. From May to September) is very cold and you have to reckon with snow-covered passes. This makes travel planning much more difficult, which is why we do not recommend these months for a visit to Patagonia. In general, it can sometimes get very cool due to strong winds, which occur all year round in this region. Many accommodations are therefore closed, transport by public transport is more difficult and some excursions are not carried out. In May and June there are frequent rains across the region.
Northern Patagonia (Lake District, Bariloche, Peninsula Valdés)
Summer: 20-30 ° C, rapid temperature drop due to wind; Winter: -5 to 5 ° C, snowfall from June to August. A visit to Northern Patagonia is recommended between September and April, because the weather here is much milder.
The lake area around Bariloche is a popular travel destination, especially in summer (from December to February). In winter (from June to early October) you can ski here during your Argentina travels. A trip to southern Patagonia (Ushuaia, Calafate and Chalten) is recommended between December and March. Southern Patagonia (eg Lago Argentino, Tierra del Fuego) Summer: rarely above 20 ° C, snow in higher altitudes, winter: – 20 to – 5 ° C
In contrast, the situation is very different in Tierra del Fuego, as the barrier effect of the Andes does not apply here. The maximum temperatures do not reach more than 14 ° C even in the warmest month, January. In the coldest month, however, the thermometer still rises to around four to six degrees. It makes sense to travel here in the months of December to March, but warm clothing is also advisable then.
