Weather and Climate in Venezuela

The climate in Venezuela is tropical according to the geographical location with less seasonal temperature fluctuations. Due to the different altitudes, the topography and the prevailing winds, there are several differently pronounced climatic zones – from the tropical humid climate on the coast to the alpine climate in the snow-covered Andes.
In much of the country is May bis November rainy season. June and August are the wettest months with the most rainfall. In the south of the country, precipitation falls more frequently throughout the year. The hottest months here are February and March and most of the year there is a tropical and humid climate with slightly drier periods in September and October and between January and March.

The country can be divided into four different temperature zones, which are largely due to the altitude: the temperatures in the tropical zone (below 800 m) are between 26 ° C and 28 ° C on an annual average. The temperate zone with most of the Venezuelan cities, including the capital Caracas, is located between 800 and 2,000 m, with average temperatures between 12 ° C and 25 ° C. The cool zone is between 2,000 and 3,000 m, here the temperatures reach between 9 ° C and 11 ° C. In the high mountains from 3,000 m altitude you will find pastureland and permanent snow fields. The average temperatures here remain below 8 ° C.

Travel in Venezuela is possible all year round. Nevertheless, the dry season is ideal for hiking and other outdoor activities. This time is also ideal for wildlife viewing in the Los Llanos plain suitable, because then all animals gather at the remaining water sources. For excursions inland or high mountains, one should avoid the wettest months from May to August.

Since the rain showers usually fall at noon or in the afternoon and rarely last longer than an hour, sightseeing in the cities is not strongly influenced by the precipitation. Some sights, such as waterfalls, are more impressive in the rainy season. The Salto Ángel is particularly spectacular after heavy rainfall in the wet months. On the other hand, it shrinks to a sparse band of water in the dry months. In addition, these falls can be difficult or impossible to reach by boat in the dry season.

For a visit to the Venezuelan coast or a beach holiday on the Caribbean beaches or on Isla Margarita, the dry season from December to April is ideal – temperatures can reach around 32 ° C, there is enough sunshine and little rain. Holidays with water sports activities such as sailing, surfing, diving or fishing in pleasant air and high water temperatures are also possible during the rest of the year. Most of the precipitation falls in October.

The main season in Venezuela is Christmas (until mid-January), Carnival (several days before Ash Wednesday) and Semana Santa (Holy Week, the week before Easter Sunday). Many festivals take place during these periods, which is why it is crowded everywhere and the prices are high. Transport and accommodation should be booked in advance.
