Weather and Climate in Honduras
In Honduras there is a tropical climate, which at higher altitudes in the temperate inland is. Due to the mountainous topography of Honduras, the local climate depends on the altitude.
On the Caribbean coast, the climate is tropical and humid with rainfall that is evenly distributed throughout the year. The Pacific coast, on the other hand, has a rainy and a dry season. The rainy season is from May to October, the dry season from November to April.
Also in central Honduras, a dry and a wet season will be different. Here the average temperatures are significantly influenced by the altitude – tierra caliente: hot up to 1,000 m, tierra templada: moderate between 1,000 and 2,000 m and tierra fria: cool at altitudes above 2,000 m. The annual rainfall is low to moderate, the rainy season is between May and October. The amount of precipitation decreases from north to south. Both coastal lowlands also belong to the tierra caliente with maximum daily temperatures between 28 and 32 ° C. In the temperate zone, the highest temperatures reach 25 to 30 degrees, in the cool mountain regions, temperatures can drop to almost freezing point at night. Like many Central American countries, Honduras is also at great risk from tropical cyclones; the hurricane season is from June to November.
Since the rainfall during the rainy season mostly falls in the afternoon, Honduras can actually be visited all year round. Nevertheless, the rather dry and not yet too hot months of February and March are recommended when the vegetation is still green. During trekking and sightseeing tours in the mountains, it can get quite cool at night during the months of January and February. The coastal lowlands are warm all year round. On the Caribbean coast, it can rain all year round, but travel is only occasionally hindered by flooding.
Fairs and celebrations take place all year round, but the largest are held between February and August.
