Weather and Climate in Belize

Belize has a tropical and humid climate, with predominantly winds blowing from the Caribbean (northeast trade winds). The temperatures keep an annual mean of approx. 26 ° C, but in the mountains they are only 22 ° C. Thanks to the wind from the sea, the humidity is easy to bear. The temperature differences between the coolest (December to March) and the hottest season (May to September) are only slight. The west of the country is generally a little cooler than the coastal regions, Temperatures on the coast vary between lows of 15 degrees in January to 35 degrees in August. Hurricanes and subsequent flooding occur regularly in Belize.

Belize has both wet and dry seasons. The rainy season extends from mid-May to November in the south and from mid-June to November in the north – this is also the time when the humidity is highest. The precipitation is most productive with over 4,000 mm on the east side of the mountains. In the north, annual precipitation reaches 1,100 mm. The so-called transition period from November to February is characterized by the lowest annual temperatures and a limited amount of rain.

The dry season is between February and April. Temperatures reach around 30 ° C. Then an average of only 20 mm of precipitation falls in the north, but 120 mm on the south coast. But even there it gets drier in March and April. The maximum temperatures rarely exceed 36 degrees Celsius in summer, and in winter they almost never fall below 16 degrees Celsius, even at night.

The best time to travel to Belize are the drier months December to May(February is the driest month in the country), but this falls in the tourist winter season with high prices and full hotels. Especially the weeks around Christmas and Easter are in high demand. During the rainy summer season (June to November) it is cheaper and not so wet, so there is a lot to do (with the exception of the south, which has two to three times as much rain as the rest of the country).
