The currency of Belize is the Belize Dollar. Its ISO code is BZD. The official abbreviation of the currency is $ or Bz $.

History of the currency of Belize

The Belize dollar was introduced back in 1864. At that time the country was still called British Honduras. When the country gained independence in 1973, not only was the name changed to Belize, but the currency was also renamed Belize dollars.

In its relatively short life span, the Belize dollar has barely seen much fluctuation. The state budget in the last few years was about $ 412.5 million, compared to revenue of $ 376.5 million. The national debt amounted to $ 961.7 million in 2008, which corresponds to about 68.2 percent of the gross domestic product. This led to a devaluation of the Belize dollar on the world market.
