The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is a country in the Antilles, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. Trinidad Island is only 11 km off the coast of Venezuela. There are 1.2 million residents (2016). The capital is Port of Spain, on the island of Trinidad. Trinidad Island was explored by Colombo in 1498, which gave it its name. Trinidad and Tobago were colonized by Spain and assigned to Britain in the early 19th century. They gained independence in 1962 and became a republic in 1976.
