The Republic of Zimbabwe is a country in southern Africa. There are 15.6 million residents. The capital is Harare, with around 1.6 million residents (2009). The Portuguese were the first Europeans to explore the current territory of Zimbabwe, in the 16th century. At the end of the 19th century, the British occupied this territory, which later became known as Southern Rhodesia. The struggles for independence intensified in the 1960s, but it was only fully achieved in 1980.
