The Republic of Liberia is in West Africa and is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. There are 4.3 million residents. The capital is Monrovia. The lands of Liberia were part of ancient Guinea, conquered by the Portuguese in the 15th century. In the following centuries, it was explored by the French, English and Dutch. In 1822, the American Colonization Society chose these lands to found a colony of freed slaves (now Monrovia). This colony proclaimed independence in 1847.
