The Republic of Gabon is a country in Central Africa, bathed by the Gulf of Guinea and cut by the equator. There are 1.7 million residents (2016). The capital is Libreville. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to visit the lands of Gabon, in 1473. They established sugar plantations and gave the region its name. In the 19th century, the French dominated much of the territory of the current country. In 1910, it became a colony as part of French Equatorial Africa. Independence was achieved in 1960.
