The current Republic of Botswana was Britain’s former protectorate of Bechuanaland, until 1966, when it gained independence. Much due to its diamond mines, Botswana developed, in the following decades, in one of the most prosperous and stable African countries. There are 2.2 million residents (2016). The capital is Gabarone.
