Belarus or Belarus (Respublika Byelarus, in Belarusian) is a country in Western Europe, without a coastline, with capital in Minsk. The highest point is Dzyarzhynskaya Hara, at 346 m. There are 9.5 million residents (2018). Belarus was a former Slavic principality in the Middle Ages. In the 18th century, it was annexed to the Russian Empire, becoming a Soviet republic in 1922. It gained its independence in 1991, but remains in close relations with Russia.
