The Republic of Rwanda, the land of a thousand hills, is a country in Central Africa, bathed by Lake Kivu. There are 13 million residents (2016). The capital is Kigali. This ancient land of Tutsis and Hutus was dominated by Germany in the late 19th century and was part of German East Africa (Deutsch-Ostafrika). It came under Belgian control during the First World War. Independence was achieved in 1962. The following decades were one of many conflicts between Tutsis and Hutus.
