The Republic of Burundi is a country in central Africa, bathed by Lake Tanganyika. There are 11 million residents. The capital is Bujumbura. The first Europeans arrived in the lands of present-day Burundi in the mid-19th century. At the end of that century, it was part of the protectorate of German East Africa, along with Tanzania and Rwanda. During the First World War, part of this protectorate was occupied by Belgian troops and was called Rwanda-Urundi. Independence was achieved in 1962, and the Kingdom of Urundi was renamed Burundi.
