Weather and Climate in Brazil

Depending on the region, the weather in Brazil can have a decisive impact on travel options, so it should definitely be considered when planning a trip to Brazil. For the most part, Brazil has a tropical climate with little seasonal temperature fluctuations.

The Amazon region in northern Brazil is one of the rainiest regions in the world. There are rainy and dry seasons, and it is hot and humid all year round. The greatest amount of precipitation falls from December to May. The advantage of the rainy season is that everything thrives more luxuriantly and is lush green. But the (warm) rain can also be great refreshment! Even at night it often rains for 3-6 hours. Rainfall also occurs the rest of the year, but the showers only last an hour or two in the afternoon. The best time to visit is July and August. The climate in the Amazon region is unpredictable. It can happen that during the dry season ( May to November ) heavy rain falls or there is wonderful sunshine during the rainy season (December to April). A trip to the Amazon is always worthwhile!

The Pantanal wetland has a rainy and dry season, you should travel in the region during the dry season ( mid-April to the end of September ). In the rest of the year there is enormous rainfall, which makes a journey through the Pantanal extremely difficult. The best time for bird and animal watching is in the latter part of the dry season from June / July to September / October. The south is the region with the greatest temperature fluctuations. During the cold winter months (June to August), temperatures in the states of São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul reach 13 ° C to 18 ° C. The further south you go, the colder it gets, and even snow is possible during the coldest winters. As everywhere along the coast, the summer is very warm with high humidity. The dry season is from March to November, followed by the rainiest season from December to March.

The summer months in Rio are characterized by high humidity and temperatures of 28 ° C. The wettest season is from October to January. The winter in Rio de Janeiro is mild at around 23 ° C.

The northeast coast, between Bahia and Maranhão, has slightly higher temperatures all year round than in Rio. During the day around 31 ° C is reached, which is rarely perceived as uncomfortable thanks to the wind and lower humidity. The rainy season lasts from around mid-December to July, but even during this time there are clear days. If you want to travel to the northeast, the period from September to January is recommended.

In summer, between December and February (the Brazilian school holidays start in mid-December and last until Carnival, usually in late February) and from July to mid-August many Brazilians are on vacation themselves, travel becomes more expensive and hotels are often fully booked. The humidity in Rio and more southern regions of Brazil can be oppressive. However, most of the festivals are celebrated on the streets and beaches during the summer months.

Brazil’s off-season falls in the southern winter. With the exception of July (school holidays), this is the least crowded and most convenient time to visit. Temperatures in Rio are around 23 ° C, with a mix of rainy and beautiful days.
