Slovakia (Slovenská Republika) is a country in Central Europe with 5.4 million residents (2018). The capital is Bratislava. In 1918, the Slovaks joined the Czechs to form Czechoslovakia. After World War II, Czechoslovakia became a communist nation, with Soviet influence. After 1989 Czechoslovakia once again became free. The Slovaks and the Czechs parted peacefully in 1993.
