Romania is a country in southeastern Europe. There are 21.5 million residents. The capital is Bucharest. The official language is Romanian, a Romance language, also official in Moldova. The principalities of Wallachia and Moldova, for centuries under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Turkish Empire, guaranteed autonomy in 1856. They came together in 1859 under the new name of Romania. The country gained full independence in 1878 and acquired new territories after the First World War. The Soviet occupation of after World War II led to the formation of a communist country in 1947. Romania underwent major political transformations in the 1990s and joined the European Union in 2007.
