Land of Abraham and Jesus Christ, Israel is a country in West Asia, bathed by the Mediterranean Sea. There are 8 million residents (2016). The capital adopted by the Government, since 1950, is Jerusalem, but without international recognition. Most countries maintain their embassies in Tel Aviv, including Brazil. Here it is difficult to separate history and mythology in antiquity. The ancient Kingdom of Judea was devastated by the Romans in the first century of the Christian era, and a large part of its people spread throughout the world then. In the Middle Ages, the region was dominated by the Arabs. After the First World War, this territory, then called Palestine, was occupied by the British. In 1948, a UN resolution defined the creation of two states in that territory: Israel (Jewish) and Palestine (Muslim). The Arabs did not accept and conflicts in the area intensified.
