The Republic of Guinea is a country in West Africa, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. There are 12 million residents (2016). The capital is Conakry. Originally, Guinea was a Portuguese-dominated territory, conquered in the 15th century. It was a large region in sub-Saharan West Africa, bathed by the Gulf of Guinea and covered part of present-day Guinea. The territory of present-day Guinea became a French protectorate in 1860 and was incorporated into French West Africa in 1904. Independence was achieved in 1958.
