Weather and Climate in Paraguay

The country is divided into two different climatic zones by the Paraguay River. The Gran Chaco plain with a tropical climate lies at an altitude of 100 to 400 m in western Paraguay. In the period from May to August, cold winds from the Antarctic can flow in unhindered, so that temperatures can drop below freezing point at night. The average minimum temperatures are around 10 ° C. During the day, however, usually around 25 degrees are measured. The heaviest precipitation falls between March and May and October and November.

In southern Paraguay is the precipitation fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. Since Paraguay is comparatively flat and only a few points are above 600 m, the temperatures in summer are almost uniformly high – in the east of the country the humidity is slightly higher. In winter, the temperatures can sometimes fall below 0 ° C due to the cold southern polar air – the average minimum temperature is 6 ° C. Average maximum temperatures in July, the coldest month, are a mild 22 ° C.

Because of the summer heat, the winter months of the southern hemisphere (May to September)more suitable for a trip to Paraguay. During this time it is a little cooler and the temperatures are much more pleasant than in summer (July is the coldest month). However, it can get surprisingly cold at night, so warm clothing is recommended. The summer of the southern hemisphere (November to March) can be very hot, with temperatures around 40 ° C, trekking or sightseeing tours can be quite exhausting. Especially in the Gran Chaco, the rainy season is not a suitable travel time, as many parts of the country then form a large swampy landscape.
