Weather and Climate in Chile

Chile is located in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons here are opposite to those in Europe.
The different regions of Chile have their own characteristic climate. The north has a desert climate with large temperature differences between day and night, but average temperatures of 20 ° C. In summer and winter there are mild temperatures around 15 – 25 ° C with only slight seasonal changes. Rain is not an obstacle to travel here, as northern Chile is one of the driest regions in the world (despite heavy cloud cover from April to December).

In the adjoining semi-desert, precipitation is more frequent.

Central Chile has a Mediterranean climate with average daily maximum temperatures of 29 ° C from December to February and around 14 ° C in June. Most of the precipitation falls in winter only on a few days of the month. Precipitation increases towards the south, with a peak in June. The Little South is characterized by winter rains, while the Great South has a sea climate with a lot of precipitation. The summer temperatures in this region are around 20 ° C, in the winder they can drop in the single digits.

The Atacama Desert can be traveled all year round, even if the summer days are very hot and the nights at higher altitudes are cold all year round. In the northern Altiplano there is the rainy season in summer, with precipitation usually falling briefly in the afternoon.

Central Chile and Santiago are best for travel in spring (September to November) or autumn (late February to April). The summer in Santiago and throughout the central area can be very hot and humid, while the winter months are quite cold and there are often heavy clouds. Southern Chile ( Torres del Paine National Park and the lake region) is best for summer (December to March) touring. In winter Chile offers excellent conditions for skiing and snowboarding. The ski areas attract numerous tourists from June to September.

The best time to Easter Island to pay a visit is September to March when the weather is warmer and drier. The maximum values ​​are reached in January and February, with 19 at night to 29 ° C during the day. At least it rains in November and February. The island is less crowded in the other half of the year (between April and August), although cooler and humid weather must be expected. It gets coldest in July and August with 15 – 20 ° C. The rainiest months are April and May. The same is true of the Juan Fernández archipelago.
