The Republic of Gambia is a country in West Africa, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean and extending along the banks of the River Gambia. It is the smallest country in continental Africa, about 40 km wide and 322 km long. There are 2 million residents (2016), about 90% are Muslim. The capital is Banjul, near the mouth of Rio, and the largest city is Serekunda, 13 km from Banjul. In the Middle Ages, Arabs traded on the Gambia River. In 1455, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to explore this River, then part of the Empire of Mali. The area surrounding the Gambia River was ceded to Great Britain by the Treaty of Paris, 1783. But, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, control of the Gambia River was disputed by other European nations, especially France. Independence was achieved in 1965, and the Republic was instituted in 1970.
