South Dakota Population

South Dakota is a sparsely populated state located in the midwestern United States. As of July 2019, the population of South Dakota was estimated to be 884,659. This is an increase of 1.3% from the previous year and makes South Dakota the fifth least populated state in the nation. The population is spread out over 77,121 square miles which makes it the 17th largest state by land area.

The population of South Dakota is primarily rural with only 14% living in cities with populations over 10,000 people. Sioux Falls is the largest city with an estimated population of 183,200 and Rapid City follows closely behind at 78,112 people. The rest of the population is spread out among other small towns and rural areas across the state. The median age in South Dakota is 37 years old which is slightly lower than the national median age of 38 years old. Additionally, there are more women than men living in South Dakota as for every 100 females there are only 95 males according to 2018 estimates from the US Census Bureau.

In terms of ethnicity and race, 85% of South Dakotans identify as white alone while 2% identify as African American alone and 6% identify as Hispanic or Latino origin alone according to 2018 estimates from the US Census Bureau. Native American tribes make up 8% of South Dakota’s population with many concentrated on reservations throughout the state such as Pine Ridge Reservation and Cheyenne River Reservation. Additionally, 5% identify as two or more races while 0.9% identify as Asian alone and 0.7% identify as Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander alone according to 2018 estimates from US Census Bureau data.
