Indiana – Between 1679 and 1681, the “Land of the Indians” was explored by the Frenchman LaSalle. The first French settlements arose later at Vincennes, but the area had to be ceded to England in 1763. Vincennes was occupied by American troops during the War of Independence and the English army was finally destroyed in 1779. The laboriously built settlements were repeatedly destroyed by the many Indian wars. Indiana became the 19th state in the United States in 1816. The capital is Indianapolis, known for the 500 miles from Indianapolis, where the best car racers in the world compete. Steel and coal are the main products of this state.
