Maine is the 39th most populous state in the United States, with an estimated population of 1,344,212 people as of July 2019. The population density is 43.8 people per square mile, making Maine the second least densely populated state after Alaska. The majority of Maine’s population is concentrated in the southern part of the state along its coastline. Portland, Maine’s largest city and economic hub, hosts a population of 66,215 people as of 2019. The greater Portland area has a combined population of over 500,000 people and is home to many immigrants from countries such as Somalia and Sudan. In addition to Portland and its surrounding suburbs, other large cities in Maine include Bangor, Lewiston/Auburn, Augusta/Waterville and Biddeford/Saco.

The median age in Maine is 44 years old compared to 38 years old nationally; however this number varies significantly between counties with Aroostook County having a median age of nearly 48 years old while Cumberland County has a median age closer to 40 years old. Over 19% of Maine’s population are 65 years or older compared to 15% nationally and this percentage increases further in rural counties such as Hancock and Washington Counties where over 25% are 65 or older. The gender distribution in Maine is nearly equal with 49% being female and 51% male; however there are more females than males among those aged 65 or older due to longer life expectancy among women than men nationwide.

In terms of race and ethnicity, 94% identify as white alone according to 2017 US Census estimates with African Americans being the largest minority group at 2%. Hispanics or Latinx make up 1%, Asians 1%, Native Americans 0.4%, Multiracial 0.4%, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander 0.1%. Approximately 11% speak a language other than English at home while 4% have limited English proficiency; Spanish is by far the most common non-English language spoken at home followed by French Creole which reflects Maine’s historical French settlement during colonial times.
