Ohio – The state was named after the Ohio River (Indian “beautiful river”). The “Buckeye State” (chestnut state) has approximately 11 million inhabitants. The area around the Ohio River was discovered in 1669 by the discoverer LaSalle, followed 15 years later by the first fur traders. The first settlement was built near Marietta in 1788, the war against the Indians living there ended 6 years later. Ohio became the 17th state in the United States in 1803. The capital is Columbus. The main products are coal, corn and cereals. Ohio was home to U.S. Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and William McKinley, as well as inventors Thomas Edison and the Wright brothers.
