In the 9th century, Polynesian Maori reached the islands of New Zealand. In 1642, the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman landed there. In the 19th century, the British began colonizing those islands, formally annexed to the British Empire, in 1840. In 1907, New Zealand became an independent domain, although the British monarch (now Queen Elizabeth) remains the country’s head of state. New Zealand has beautiful scenery and is a country with a high degree of development. The capital is Wellington.
