Arkansas – This state was also conquered by Hernando de Soto (1541). The name, also Indian, means “downstream people” and is also referred to as the Land of Opportunity. In 1686 Arkansas was settled by the French at the Arkansas Post. In 1762, however, the state had to be ceded to Spain and returned to France in 1800. In the Civil War (1861-1865), Arkansas fought on the side of the Confederates after having previously separated from the Union, where it joined as the 25th state in 1836. The main products are oil, cattle and pig breeding, cotton and fisheries. The capital of the approximately 2.1 million state is Little Rock.
