Serbia (Republika Srbija) is one of the countries in the Balkans. There are 7.1 million residents (2018). The capital is Belgrade. The kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians was formed in 1918, its name was changed to Yugoslavia in 1929. In 1992, due to ethnic issues, Yugoslavia dismembered and its communist regime was abandoned. Thus, the independent republics of Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina emerged. The remaining republics of Serbia and Montenegro joined into a federation, separating in 2006. The province of Kosovo became an independent country in 2008.
