The Republic of Albania is located on the Balkan peninsula, bathed by the Adriatic Sea. There are 3 million residents (2016). The capital is Tirana, since 1920. The region, dominated in antiquity by the Greeks and Romans, was conquered in the 15th century by the Ottoman Turks. The country was declared independent in 1912 and emerged as a communist state after World War II. In the early 1990s, Albanians adopted a multi-party democracy and began to transition to a more liberal economy.
