It was home to two of the largest historical empires in the world: the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire. Modern Turkey was founded in 1923 with what was left of the old Ottoman Empire, after its defeat in the First World War. The biggest city is Istanbul. The capital is Ankara.
