The Kingdom of Cambodia is a country in Southeast Asia, officially Buddhist, bathed by the Gulf of Thailand. There are 16 million residents (2016). The capital is Phnom Penh. In the Middle Ages, present-day Cambodia was part of the Khmer Empire (Angkor), a Buddhist regime. In the 16th century, several Portuguese people settled near today’s Phnom Penh, in a Catholic community. In 1863, Cambodia became a French protectorate (Cambodge). Independence was achieved in 1953.
