Bangladesh is an Asian country, in the former region of Bengal, of Muslim majority, bathed by the Bay of Bengal. Much of its territory is located in the delta of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. There are 156 million residents (2016), with a high population density. The capital is Dhaka (Dhaka), one of the most populous cities in the world. Land of ancient civilizations, the current territory of Bangladesh was invaded by Muslims in the Middle Ages. In the 16th century, the Portuguese arrived, who established a factory in Chittagong (Porto Grande de Bengal) and introduced Christianity to the region. In the 17th century, the Portuguese were expelled by the Mongols. The British took control of this area in the 18th century, which later became part of British India. In 1947, East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, was created. Independence was achieved in 1971.
