The Republic of Arzebaijan (Azarbaycan Respublikasi) is a country in the Caucasus, bathed by the Caspian Sea. Its territory is of great physiographic complexity and has mountains over four thousand meters high. Includes the Naxcivan autonomous enclave. There are 9.9 million residents (2016). The capital is Baku. Azerbaijan was one of the Soviet republics and gained independence in 1991. It is a prosperous country due to the exploitation of gas and oil.
