Slovenia is a small country in central Europe with 2.1 million residents (2018). The capital is Ljubljana. The Slovenian lands were part of the Holy Roman Empire and Austria, until 1918, when the Slovenians joined the Serbs and Croats in the formation of a new multinational state, renamed Yugoslavia, in 1929. After the Second World War, Slovenia became a republic of Yugoslavia renewed, which despite being communist, distanced itself from Moscow’s domination. Dissatisfied with Serb majority power, Slovenians gained independence in 1991 after a 10-day war. Historical ties with Western Europe and a stable democracy helped to transform Slovenia into a modern state, which joined the European Union in 2004.
