Ireland is an island country in northern Europe. There are 5.1 million residents (2018). The capital is Dublin. Celtic tribes arrived on the island of Ireland between 600 and 150 BC. Scandinavians began to invade Ireland in the late 8th century, but were defeated in 1014. English invasions started in the 12th century and gave rise to many conflicts over the next centuries. In 1949, Ireland withdrew from the British Community and joined the European Community in 1973. Northern Ireland remains part of the United Kingdom.
