The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is a country in Asia with 200 million residents (2016). The capital is Islamabad. Karachi is the most populous city. Pakistan’s history is closely linked to that of India and the ancient Hindu civilization. In the Middle Ages, the Arabs brought Islam. In the 16th century, the territory of present-day Pakistan was dominated by Mongols and the Portuguese traded in Karachi. In the 19th century, Pakistan became part of British India. Independence and separation from India was achieved in 1947 as Western Pakistan (Bangladesh was East Pakistan). Religious differences marked the separation. The Kashmir is still a territorial dispute region.
