The Sultanate of Oman is a country on the Arabian Peninsula, bathed by the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. There are 3.4 million residents (2016). The capital is Muscat. In the 2nd century BC, Arab tribes migrated to the current territory of Oman. Islam was introduced in the 7th century. In 1507, the Portuguese took control of Muscat and the surrounding area. They dominated the region until 1650. In 1737, the country was invaded by the Persians, who extended their domain to Zanzibar (currently Tanzania), with British support.
