Laos is a country in Indochina, without access to the sea. There are 7 million residents (2016). The capital is Vientiane. In the Middle Ages, the current territory of Laos was famous for the number of elephants. In the 17th century, the territory was divided into two kingdoms: Vientiane and Luang Prabang. In the 19th century, Laos became a French protectorate. It was invaded by Japan in World War II and taken over by the French. Independence was achieved in 1949.
