The Republic of Namibia is a country in southern Africa, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. Much of its territory is made up of deserts. There are 2.4 million residents. The capital is Windhoek. The main ports are Luderitz and Walvis Bay. In the 1480s, the coast of present-day Namibia was explored by the Portuguese. Then the Dutch and English arrived. In the 1880s, the Germans arrived, who colonized the territory, becoming the German Southwest Africa (Deutsch-Südwestafrika). It was occupied by the South African Union during the First World War. Independence was achieved in 1990.
