The Republic of Mali is a country in West Africa, without access to the sea, but bathed by the River Niger. Most of its territory is in the Sahara. There are 17.5 million residents (2016). The capital is Bamako. Part of the current Mali lands belonged to the ancient and powerful Mali Empire in the Middle Ages. French rule began in the 19th century. In 1890, it became French Sudan. Independence was achieved in 1960, adopting its current name.
