The Republic of Malawi is a country in Central Africa, bathed by the lake of the same name, also known as Lake Niassa (this is also the name of the province of Mozambique bathed by the Lake). There are 18.6 million residents (2016). The capital is Lilongwe. In 1616, Lake Niassa was identified by the Portuguese explorer Gaspar Bocarro, as reported by Antonio Bocarro, in Decade 13 of the History of India (Lisbon, 1876). In the 19th century, the British arrived, who established the protectorate of Nyasaland in 1891. Independence was achieved in 1964 under the name of Malawi.
