Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)

The new Berlin Brandenburg airport opened on October 31, 2020. He uses the abbreviation BER as the IATA code. Before its completion, this was the IATA code for all Berlin airports (most recently Tegel and Schönefeld).

As the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany, Berlin now has only one international airport, which secures the air traffic infrastructure for the entire Berlin-Brandenburg region.

Due to its central location in Central Europe, all important European destinations, especially the major airports in Eastern Europe, can be reached quickly. Further expansion, especially on the lucrative intercontinental routes, is planned.

Berlin Brandenburg is expected to be the third largest airport in Germany after Frankfurt and Munich and at the same time an important hub for German and international airlines.

The most modern airport on the European continent is named after Willy Brandt, the former Federal Chancellor and former Mayor of the city of Berlin.

The disused Tegel Airport (TXL) in the north-west of the capital was replaced with the commissioning of BER Airport and is to serve as an emergency solution for possible bottlenecks for six months after its closure on November 7, 2020, before the construction of various housing projects on the airport site begins.

The also former Berlin-Schönefeld Airport (SXF) was integrated into the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport, which was built next door, and is now its Terminal 5.

Arriving by car is possible thanks to its own connection to the A113 motorway directly to the airport. There is also a connection to the B96a federal road.

Passengers arriving by train can also drive directly to the airport. The stations “Terminal 1-2” and “Terminal 5” are located below the building. There is a connection to the Airport Express FEX, to the regional train lines RE7, RB14 and RB22 as well as to the S-Bahn lines S9 and S45. The offer is supplemented by various express and other BVG bus lines.

For passengers who have to plan a longer stopover at the airport, there are numerous overnight accommodations around the airfield. One of these hotels and guest houses is the newly built Steigenberger Hotel in Airport City, which was built in the immediate vicinity of the terminal building.

History
The Berlin Brandenburg airport should as a new single airport in the region of Berlin will be officially put into operation first in October 2007. However, the opening date has been postponed several times due to planning errors and problems, including fire and disaster control.

The originally planned IATA code BBI (for Berlin Brandenburg International) could no longer be used, as the code was already assigned to the Indian airport Bhubaneshwar during the extended construction phase.

The huge construction project has meanwhile represented the largest airport construction site in Europe. The planned opening date in October 2011 could also not be met due to delays in the interior work.

The first groundbreaking for the realization took place in September 2006 by the Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit, the Brandenburg Prime Minister Matthias Platzeck, the former CEO of Deutsche Bahn AG Hartmut Mehdorn and the former Federal Minister for Transport, Building and Urban Development Wolfgang Tiefensee.

Overall, the new airport, the total cost of which is estimated at more than seven billion euros, has a total area of around 1470 hectares, which corresponds to the size of around 2,000 soccer fields.

Due to the increase in passenger numbers at all Berlin airports in recent years to around 22 million passengers per year and the associated capacity overload, especially at Tegel Airport, a realignment of Berlin air traffic was inevitable, especially if one believes the further forecast growth figures of some economic experts.

The new capital city airport is now geared towards up to 46 million passengers per year. However, since the concept of the development plan was developed in advance using a modular process, there is the possibility of gradually increasing the capacity of the new terminal to up to 58 million passengers. According to current plans, Terminal 1 alone can handle around 6500 passengers per hour at peak times.

Terminal buildings 1 and 2 are located in the middle of two parallel runways. The so-called “northern runway” was extended from 3000 to 3600 meters after the extension project was completed. The newly created “Südbahn”, on the other hand, was 4000 meters long. This means that even the Airbus A380, known colloquially as the “Superjumbo”, can take off and land in Berlin.

The airport train station, which has also been completely rebuilt, provides time-saving connections to the center of the capital and to the surrounding area. Two of the platforms are intended for regional and long-distance traffic and one for the Berlin S-Bahn. The S-Bahn only needs about 20 minutes for the 20-kilometer route from the airport to the city center. In addition, the airport has its own motorway connection to the A113 and to the federal highway 96a below the terminal building.
