Saint Lucia is a country and volcanic island in the Antilles. It has unusual landscapes and beautiful beaches. There are 164 thousand residents (2016). The capital is Castries. Columbus landed here, in 1502. The rule over Saint Lucia was disputed between English and French throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Great Britain started to dominate the Island, starting in 1814. It was one of the last British possessions to abolish the slavery in 1834. Independence was achieved in 1979.
