Barbados is an island country in the Antilles, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. The name Barbados was given by the Portuguese, who visited the island in the 16th century, but there are doubts as to the reason for the name. Barbados is a parliamentary monarchy, whose head of state is the same British monarch, represented by a Governor-General. There are 284 thousand residents (2016). The capital is Bridgetown. Barbados was inhabited by Arawak and Caribbean Indians when it was discovered by the Spanish in the early 16th century. The English colonized the island in the 17th century. Independence was achieved in 1966.
