Lithuania (Lietuvos Respublika) is one of the countries bordering the Baltic Sea in northern Europe. There are 2.8 million residents. The capital is Vilnius. Independent between the two World Wars, Lithuania was annexed by the USSR in 1940. On March 11, 1990, Lithuania became the first of the Soviet republics to declare its independence, but Moscow did not recognize this proclamation until September 1991. Later, the country restructured its economy to integrate with Western institutions, such as NATO and the European Union, in 2004.
