Turkmenistan is a country in Central Asia, bathed by the Caspian Sea. There are 5.3 million residents. The capital is Ashgabat. For most of its history, the territory of present-day Turkmenistan has been inhabited by former tribal organizations or clans, without political unity or dominated by other civilizations, such as Persia. It was invaded by the Mongols in the 13th century. Being on the road to the Silk Road, there were many caravan attackers. In the second half of the 19th century, Turkmenistan was invaded by the Russians. It became a Soviet republic in 1924 and gained independence in 1991.
