Qatar (Dawlat Qatar) is a country on the Arabian Peninsula, on a smaller peninsula bathed by the Persian Gulf. It has the highest per capita income in the world, due to oil exploration. There are 2.3 million residents (2016). In 2022, it will host the Football World Cup. The capital is Doha. In the Middle Ages, Qatar was dominated by the Arabs. In the mid-16th century, the Portuguese dominated the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula and had commercial control over the Persian Gulf. In the 18th century, Qatar was again under Arab rule. In 1871, the Ottomans occupied Qatar. In the early 20th century, it was a British protectorate. Independence was achieved in 1971. In June 2017, Qatar was accused by other countries in the Middle East of collaborating with terrorists.
