Today Lebanon was the center of the ancient Phoenician civilization, in antiquity. This territory was later conquered by the Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Ottomans. After the First World War, it became a French protectorate. Independence was achieved in 1943. Since then, there have been many conflicts in the country.
